The intake totals for all animals (canines and felines) in 2010 and 2011 are the lowest of the past 6 years.
However, a strange phenomenon seems to be occurring…While the total number of kittens, cats, dogs and puppies entering the shelter has decreased, the number of bully breeds entering the shelter has increased (and has been consistently increasing every year, since 2006).
While, we are thrilled at the overall decrease in our local shelter, what does this mean? This means that we need to work harder in the community on educating about this very breed, that has become one of the most over bred. We would love to put our heads together, with other like-minded organizations, to bring these numbers back down for bully breeds. In 2011, almost 15% of the dogs that came in were bully breeds (this includes both owner surrendered and those that came in as strays). We are hoping to do a poster project very soon, that will hopefully help with targeted education in our communities, about this phenomenon.
